Inspired By a Sermon

Hello lovely friends of mine and once again, Happy New Year! Smile
Is everyone having a good year so far? Winking smile (hehe)
Remember, you are in control of your thoughts and actions; therefore, you have the ability make this year the best year.

Last night I ended my post with saying that today’s post was going to be a  “fitness” post; however, my parents and I began the first day of 2012 by going to church and I was so incredibly inspired by our priests sermon that I am changing the topic of today’s post!

This morning our priest spoke about the importance of living in the present and enjoying the current situation rather than focusing on the future.

As the new year is now upon us, many people tend to become preoccupied with forecasting the future and making predications on what is to come, but what is the point?

Why focus on something that you are unable to change?

Doesn’t it make much more sense to focus on the present moment and enjoy it?

From personal experience, I find that focusing more on the future leads to more stress in my life. And who wants that?

Before hearing my priest’s sermon, I have never really thought about how much time I spend looking forward.
Of course it is great to establish goals to work toward and make long-term plans and commitments; however, it is also important to be happy and content with what we have at the present time. And personally, I find that I am a much happier person when I do the latter.

Think of the last time you were out with your friends or family…
What was on your mind? Were you focusing on the present moment or were you stressing about something else; something that hasn’t yet happened; the future?
I have been in both of the previous situations before; enjoying what I was doing at that certain time, enjoying the moment and also the other situation, thinking about the future. But looking back on the previous situations, the times that I was simply enjoying the present moment rather than thinking about other things such as the future were much more enjoyable and less stressful.

Seeing as how we cannot predict or change the future, I am going to begin being more mindful about where I am and what I am doing now.

This year I am going to work on really enjoying where I am, how far I have come, and what I am currently doing for myself.

I am in an amazing place in my life right now.
I live in one of my favourite cities within Canada, attending the university of my choice, in the program of my dreams, and have amazing family and friends to spend my life with.
Obviously I have much more to be grateful for; this is just a few things that I had to mention.

I am quite excited to think more about my goals Smile I know you don’t have to wait for a new year to make goals, but it’s a great time to start, so I have been doing some thinking lately about where I want to be a year from now and what I want to see myself accomplish within this next year.

I have such an exciting year coming up. This next term of university will be great. I have interesting classes and can’t wait to start. Next year is my last year of undergrad, so that’s even more exciting!

I have huge dreams and aspirations and I can’t wait to see where life takes me Smile But, back to my priests sermon, I can be patient.

God has been patient with me for my entire life.

I can be patient and wait to see where life takes me.

So, I will enjoy where I am and what I am doing now.

Don’t be so focussed on the future that you forget to enjoy the present!
Smile

I started my new outlook today and made sure that I was being mindful in everything I do. I had a great day and hope you all did as well Smile

Has the new year gotten you thinking about goals and dreams? If so, share one with me!
Are you good at enjoying the present moment or do you find yourself focussing on the future more than necessary?
How did you spend the first day of the new year?
I was at home with my family Smile My Grandma drove from Regina to see me, so we made a nice supper and invited my Uncle over as well Smile Fish, rice, and brussel sprouts! (P.s. a new recipe to come!)

  1. Beautiful post 🙂 The sermon at my church was really similar! Yay for an amazing start to 2012 with God by our sides!!

  2. Great post, girl! And a happy new year to you!! I spent the day in as well. I did a lot of food prep for the week and am now catching up on all my favourite blogs!!

I have loved following you in 2011 and can’t wait to see what 2012 brings! xoxo

  3. You inspire me to eat better. You honestly honestly do. I LOVE these recipes and sample meals. (Try to throw in some snack recipes and ideas sometimes to if you can!).

I love the concept of this. Stay in the NOW , not yesterday and not tommorow.

How does a person do this though when they feel so lost and behind in life? I’m in my 30’s and job loss, and very little (like I don’t even know what iphones’ or kitchen gadgets are, I’ve had to scale down so much cause of money troubles). But I MUST be positive and not be envious of others. Instead I have to be grateful for what I have, versus compare.

I really should get to church…my friend keeps asking me to go but its like its so daunting to me. I shouldn’t be like that.

  4. Wow, such a meaningful life lesson post. That’s a great attitude to have throughout life. I hope you have a fantastic New Year love! 🙂 ❤

  5. What a nice sermon! Now I kinda wish I had gone to church this morning, but I slept in :s So far the new year has gotten me thinking about relationships and really evaluating dysfunctional ones. Along the lines of being in the present, I think that sometimes the past can make you treat a boyfriend/girlfriend, or in my case, a friend differently because you remember the good times you use to have. But instead, if we’re being treated like crap in the present, the past/future might not matter. I dont know… just something I’ve been thinking about!
But I had a great first day of 2012, which I spent with friends and family 🙂 Every day of this year is gonna be fab 🙂

  6. That’s a great thought and I am def guilty of looking ahead, rather than focusing on the current moment, quite frequently… Thanks for sharing chica!

  7. SO true!! I was inspired by a sermon the other night as well. I hope you have a wonderful day! 🙂

  8. This is something that I’ve always struggled with. I tend to get so caught up and worried about what’s going to happen that I overlook what actually is happening. Thanks for this post! It’s a nice reminder for the new year!

  9. Love this! That sounds like it was such an inspiring sermon. I’m really excited to start living in the moment more this year instead of always thinking about the future. Especially when we’re in school, I feel like we’re always looking forward to vacations and breaks – but there’s so much to enjoy in London NOW! I can’t wait to make this semester the best one yet. 😀

  10. What an awesome post – it is so true. Like many people, I am very guilty of focusing on the future – what I need to change, what I need to do later, what I can do to make things better – that I don’t step back and think “okay, my life is great NOW.” This is why I am on a fence with new years resolutions because they are ALL about focusing on the future and thinking of ways to change the present life. It’s just so important to realize how great things are right now.

  11. Great blog 🙂
    Happy New Year!

  12. I spent the first day laying around! I love being off work 🙂

  13. This is such a great post and it’s so true! I feel inspired right now having read it. I’m really excited to start this year fresh and try and make some deep changes to my life, including stressing less and laughing more. I think the little things can pass us by, but sometimes it’s the little things that make life worth living. Who cares about the big picture?! It’s always changing afterall!

  14. great post girl!! ❤ I do sometimes catch myself not living in the moment and worrying about the future, but sometimes you really have to try and live in the present & enjoy yourself! I know I will try to do this as well !! ❤ ❤

  15. Aah love this post!! I am SO guilty of not living in the moment and always thinking about/planning for the future…perhaps that’s why I’m so stressed out much of the time hah! I definitely need to at least take a little time every day to be thankful for what I’ve got right in front of me 🙂
