Attitude is Everything

Good evening friends and Happy November Open-mouthed smile A new month. How exciting Smile
Just like a new day, a new month is full of new opportunities and is a great time to create some new goals to work towards Smile

To be honest, that is exactly what this post was going to be about; my new goals for the month. My mind has been going cray cray for a while now and I have working on making a few changes in a few different areas within my life Smile Of course I will fill all of you in on the positive changes and goals that I have made or want to make, but tonight I just rather blab about my day and all of the positives that came of it! Smile So I’m going to roll with that…

I know I have posted about positivity a lot in the past, but what can I say… I guess I am a positive person and I find that by dwelling on the positive aspects in life we can truly live a more positive and fulfilling life.

Today, I was outrageously stressed out about my midterm. Typically, I like to have 10 days to study for an exam. I love walking into an exam feeling like I am going to own it Winking smile Especially since this is university stuff. In high school obviously this was a totally different situation. I got by without studying (and by “getting by” I’m talking high 80’s to 90’s). As most of us know, university is much different and the study time that must take place before exams are much more time consuming. Let’s just say, I did not feel prepared for the midterm I wrote today. It was an awful feeling and I never want to go through it again. However, looking back on things now I can pinpoint reasons as to why I felt so unprepared.

Of course the events that took place this weekend such as a 6.5 hour student council meeting wasn’t ideal when I had three midterms to prepare for, but what really got to me was what others were saying about the upcoming midterm.

The jibber jabber coming from all of the other students totally psyched me out for this exam and that is exactly what got to me.

How come I didn’t know better?

I am the girl always telling my friends “don’t worry about what others say”. I usually use this term when trying to help with self confidence, but I could have totally applied my own advice to my overly dramatic worries that I was experiencing today.

If I didn’t listen to what others were saying about the exam, I would have went into that exam with a much more positive and confident attitude. Remember, attitude is everything.

Attitude truly does make a difference. Of course I am not going to feel good about the exam if I go in thinking I don’t know anything. I studied as much as I could and I did my best. That’s all that can be asked of me.

Moral of the story, I should take my own advice sometimes.

An even better moral… don’t let others influence your thoughts.
Be you.
If others want to be negative, let them. But we don’t have time for that. We only have time for being positive. What a waste of time being a Negative Nelly; don’t you agree?

So even though the midterm didn’t go amazing, of course I found some way to look on the bright side Winking smile

I told myself that now after writing this exam I know how to properly prepare for my final Smile That’s the great thing about midterms! Sometimes I just don’t know where to begin with studying for a class! Some studying techniques work better for others and midterms are all about figuring that out! Smile I am sure the final will go much better now that I know how our teacher writes exams and I assure you, I will not be listening to what other people are saying or anticipating about how the exam will be Winking smile

I hope all of you who are also focusing on your studies a little bit more intensely lately can take something from this post and learn from it. I always hope to leave you guys will a little something Smile Even if it’s just a little somethin’ somethin’ Winking smile

So, we all know it just wouldn’t be a typical Meg post if there wasn’t some kind of fitness or food talk thrown into the mix, right!? Winking smile

Well, I will most definitely be talking about fitness tomorrow Open-mouthed smile I had an amazing workout today and am expecting another one tomorrow! I will be doing this workout tomorrow and am so looking forward to it!

Later on in the week, I will be sharing more recipes with you all that I just cannot get enough of lately Open-mouthed smile Some fantastic creations have been developed in the my kitchen lately and must be celebrated with my favourite foodie friends Open-mouthed smile

But today, I am sharing a new to me ingredient Open-mouthed smile Nothing wrong with something new for the new month is there? Winking smile Come on. I had to try something new today Open-mouthed smile It was a must!

Walnut oil!

walnutlove 020

I have never tried walnut oil before, but I think it will be showing up a lot more lately as it was fab Open-mouthed smile

Walnuts are my all time favourite nut, so it is no wonder why I instantly loved this type of oil Open-mouthed smile

I am constantly buying these big bags of walnuts from Costco Winking smile

walnutlove 021

Would you have a more of an understanding of my love for walnuts if I told you that this was my third bag of walnuts since September? Winking smile

I also found walnut butter while I was in British Columbia this summer Smile

walnutlove 022

It’s good, but… there’s a reason that the jar is pretty much still full. I definitely prefer the actual walnut and almond butter is much better than walnut butter (IMO!)

So, I’m looking forward to cooking more with walnut oil, but for now…

Here’s a super simple recipe (if it can even be called a recipe?) that I hope you all will enjoy Open-mouthed smile (Of course, you can use any type of oil for this recipe, but this is when I discovered my love for walnut oil)

walnutlove 004

Walnut Oil and Parmesan Sautéed Brussel Sprouts

2 cups brussel sprouts, washed and halved or quartered

1 tsp walnut oil

parmesan (I used vegan parm!)

zest of a lemon

Bring an inch of water to a boil in a large deep skillet over medium to high heat. Add brussel sprouts and cover until bright green. Drain water. Add oil to skillet, reduce heat, and sauté until brussel sprouts begin to brown and become fragrant. Remove from heat. Top with parmesan and freshly grated lemon zest!

This tastes phenomenal and is such an easy side dish Smile Make it now

Me love my brussel sprouts Winking smile

  1. I’ve always wanted to try walnut butter, it’s definitely my favorite nut! 🙂 artisana is such a great brand too, I love their cashew butter mmm
Hope you have a great night and enjoy beginning a new month!

  2. I bought a jar of artisana walnut butter a month or so ago because I LOVE walnuts, but I agree- the nut butter isn’t as good as the actual nuts. I usually roast my brussels which I love. I will definitely be trying your method though, it sounds delicious! And I need to get my hands on some walnut oil asap!
I love this post, girl. Your positivity is one of the many reasons why I love your blog so much. And one of the many reasons I think we’d be such good friends if we ever met in person!

  3. My favorite nut is almonds but I am not a fan of almond butter. lol. Weird how it is similar with our favorite nuts! I actually just tried brussel sprouts. I have only roasted them. They are pretty good but they are certainly not my favorite thing ever! My latest fitness goal is to really go hard in the weight room by following Jamie Eason’s plan! I’m loving it so far!

  4. i get the big bag of walnuts from costco too! i can TOTALLY relate to this post. i’ve been working hard on this exact thing this quarter…i’m taking a super hard class that has a lot of negative rumors that go along with it….and i’ve been trying to focus on just preparing me, and not worrying about everyone else!

  5. LOVE LOVE LOVE brussel sprouts – that picture looks amazing!

I have a lot in the works for November and the coming months … lots of goals and challenges. I hope if I put together the challenge for sticking to it during the Holiday season you’re in – I’d love to have you be a part of it! 🙂

YOU, my friend, rock! Up that confidence, you SO know what you’re talking about!

  6. I wanna be like meg when I “grow” up yes, you have the best attitude toward life in the world! I love you and your blog because of it! ❤

  7. Isabelle@cheesymiteapples

yum I like the sound of that walnut butter. My fave nuts are cashews! Brussel sprouts I love boiling or microwaving and smothering them in bbq/tomato sauce!
A++ post 🙂 Life is so short why waste it be negative.

    Good luck with studying!!

  8. I LOVE your attitude about attitude 🙂 It’s so true! Being positive always yields better results when it comes to school, sports… anything really! I’m a big advocate of the power of positivity so this post made me smile. You have me starting the day off on a good note!
My favorite nut for snacking is pecans or pistachios and my favorite nut for butter is peanut. I’ve had walnut butter when I made it on my own. Chocolate walnut butter is like a liquid walnut brownie! Soooo good!

  9. OMG you’re so right – attitude is really what makes or breaks pretty much everything! I got a taste of that yesterday too – my workout completely failed, I meant to do an hour on the bike and 20 minutes in, my injury was bothering me and I was just sick of cross-training and being injured…so I kinda gave up. Normally when that happens, it bothers me to the point where I beat myself up about it all. day. long. But yesterday, I tried something new – instead of thinking “wow, I’m a fail/a fatty/out of shape, can’t even finish a workout, I need to make up for this tomorrow”, I forced myself to think “nope, it’s ok, I’m injured – a 20 minute bike session just means my ankles get 40 more minutes of healing time than usual!” and I decided to forget about it and go on with my day – and I had a great rest of the day!! And hey you never know – I bet you probably scored better on that exam than you think 🙂 – and even if you didn’t, well, that’s how you learn right? 😀 and at least walnuts cure everything, they’re my favorite nut (but not nut butter) too!

  10. Walnuts are the BEST. So is this post! I love your attitude 😀 I am a firm believer in the fact that you are as happy as you want to be.
Your brussels look to die for 🙂 walnut oil sounds heavenly.

  11. Loving the quotes, both very true. Our outlook on everything definitly makes or breaks us/our goals.

Walnut butter? Is this legit, gotta get this stuff asap.

  12. attitude IS everything, for real. There are some days when I nit pick at things, and it just seems like EVERYTHING goes wrong. BUT if I just focus on the good and let the little stuff roll off my back, the day wouldnt be bad at all! We have the power to change our attitudes, and we really should 🙂

  13. You’re so positive! I think it’s wonderful 🙂 This was a great post to read on a Weds morning!
I’ve noticed that when I get stressed I get kinda blah about things, but it’s definitely good to remember to look on the bright side. After all, it’s so much better than the negative! When you’re positive, you’re not weighed down with all the icky stuff so you can get more accomplished and enjoy your tasks more.
Thank you for reminding me 😀

P.S. I think my favorite nut depends on the context… walnuts for baking, cashews for snacking, and almonds for everything else (especially gelato)!! Also, I dislike brussel sprouts, but maybe I need to try roasting them as some ppl wrote in the comments. And yes, I usually make goals for the month, but I haven’t made any yet!! Pinterest is very inspirational on that front!!

  14. What’s your favourite nut? Yes please
Have you ever tried walnut butter? No, but I do love almond butter too!
Do you like brussel sprouts? absofreakinlutely!
What is your favourite way to prepare brussel sprouts? I have never sautéed my brussel sprouts before! made this for the kids
    http://radiomomrhetoric.wordpress.com/2011/05/10/cauliflower-brussel-sprout-au-gratin/
but will take mine just steamed with herbs too! (and maybe a bit of butter-shhh)
Do you make new goals for a new month? Well, I bought new running shoes yesterday and a friend and I are considering a detox of sorts (mainly sugar)
Did you try anything new in light of the new month? drank way more water this morning already…and incorperating some oif your excercises! woot woot!

  15. I love walnuts and pecans!!! Cashews are great too!! You really can’t go wrong with nuts! Those brussel sprouts look great! I wanted to tell you, I tried the tofu last night and loved it! I made it with some mashed sweet potato. Pure heaven. It’s definitely going to be a regular on my shopping list 🙂

  16. I used to HATE walnuts and pecans, but they’re growing on me. Definitely have not tried walnut butter yet.

I totally agree that attitude can make such a difference. The trick is keeping it positive! It’s so easy to fall into frustration and anger when things don’t go right.
